La degradación de la tierra amenaza los medios de subsistencia y aumenta los niveles de pobreza, particularmente en zonas áridas y zonas semiáridas. Si bien existen factores biofísicos que conducen a la degradación de los paisajes, las acciones antropogénicas a menudo catalizan el proceso. África verde, a través del uso de la Pachamama Metodología Raymi (PMR) de Perú, pretende mejorar las condiciones de vida de los más pobres personas en el distrito de Babati de Tanzania, trabajando en recuperación ecológica, salud preventiva medidas y recuperación económica. Esta evaluación del proyecto Greening Africa se centró en la primera fase del proyecto: GA 1. Usamos discusiones de grupos focales y una herramienta de encuesta rápida entre 124 agricultores de la Aldea Sarame y Vilima Vitatu para evaluar los resultados alcanzados.
Esta evaluación encontró que GA ha sido capaz de generar un cambio considerable en el área, y que las personas ahora están mejor capacitadas y conscientes de la importancia de invertir en su hogar. El enfoque de PMR evidentemente funciona en Tanzania, porque estimula a las personas a invertir en su bienestar, mejorar sus hogares y empezar a trabajar en la restauración ecológica. El principal instrumento del proyecto, los concursos, son muy apreciados por la población, y los premios que se pueden ganar estimulan su participación. Todas las personas conocen y hablan de PMR y la importancia de plantar árboles, y el proyecto es muy apreciado por los agricultores y autoridades locales.
